Micro-credentials: Is it a threat or an opportunity to Higher Ed?
When a shorter, accessible, and affordable education model wins.
In 2023, we are precisely celebrating the 200 years of the US education system where the first private normal school in the US was founded in 1823. It has been used to educate our ancestors, great-grandparents, and national heroes. In other words, the system witnessed the American civil war, two world wars, two huge technology shifts, the Ukraine-Russia war, and the great resignation.
Can you imagine? 200 long years. Obviously, the education system needs a makeover.
In the last decades, slow-moving ideas have changed the trajectory of the education system around the world. The traditional four years to gain a degree are slowly being replaced with weeks or months of earning digital badges and micro-credentials. The physical classrooms are shifting to hybrid and online classrooms. Modern pedagogies are being discovered. Slowly, we are renovating the education system.
One of the biggest contributors to this transformation is micro-credentials. They are estimated to reach a $10 billion market in 2025. It’s a fast-moving market, budget-effective with high impact.
